Nicollet Investment Management is not about one individual or professional, we are a team.

Let’s meet the financial professionals that are here to help you reach your goals and objectives:

Mark Hoonsbeen, CFA, Principal

Mark acquired ownership of Nicollet in 2000, but his experience covered a broad spectrum of the investment market long before that.

After completing his Master of Science degree in Finance, he started his career in the mid-1980s with the St. Paul Companies as a fixed income research analyst. His job was to analyze and understand the underlying finances of the bond investments that were owned.

After a couple of years, Mark was asked to join the St. Paul’s stock investment group. As a stock analyst and later portfolio manager, Mark continued to learn the importance of independent research and judgment investing in stocks.

While at St. Paul, he also developed and managed a multi-million-dollar stock-option over-write strategy, which gave him extensive experience in the options market. He then teamed with one of the company’s lead underwriters to run a venture capital fund dedicated to private investments in the insurance industry.

In 1994, he accepted a position with Investment Advisers Inc. At IAI, Mark was the co-portfolio manager for their Regional Investment strategy; later, he managed that fund along with a mid/small-cap strategy that also included a mutual fund and separately managed institutional clients.

In 1999, Mark made a personal decision. He decided to take his experience as an investor to work with individual families. He felt it was essential that the professionals investing a family’s savings understand the detail surrounding how they were going to need the money. He wanted to know the people he was working for.

Since joining Nicollet, Mark has worked directly with many individuals and families, helping them with financial decisions and investing their savings. He now has a better perspective on the benefit Nicollet provides its clients.

Nicollet manages stock and bond portfolios for clients, and we’d say we do a good job—but that’s not the main reason to hire Nicollet. Nicollet also does very detailed financial planning and helps clients with all sorts of financial decisions—but even that’s not the main reason to hire Nicollet. It’s Nicollet’s willingness to integrate financial planning with specific investment strategies that sets us apart.

Marc Hadley, Senior Managing Director

After three decades as a financial and investment advisor, Marc made a move to join the Nicollet team in 2017 because of the shared values and a focus on highly personalized services for clients. For a number of years, he has referred clients to Nicollet for investment management services largely due to the quality and competitiveness of the work, but also because the approach and methodology is closely aligned with his own.

Marc enjoys being part of a team that cares about client success, and about improving people’s lives by guiding them to well-informed financial decisions. He is energized by his work with a firm that values client relationships, and one that can deliver meaningful solutions for our very diverse group of clients.

Outside of working life, Marc loves spending time with his wife and adult children and their families. He also loves to read, play a little golf, and travel to visit his extended family and friends here in Minnesota and elsewhere. He has served in youth athletics, civic organizations like Rotary International, and in volunteer work for the NAMI organization, as well as currently with People Incorporated, both of which serve our friends, family, and neighbors in the community who live with mental illness.

Marc is a lifelong resident of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in political science. He did post-graduate work in education administration and is a Certified Financial Planner ™ practitioner since 1987.

Nate Travis, Senior Managing Director

Nate joined Nicollet Investment Management in October 2019. He brings a unique depth to the team where he is a key cog in all facets of the Nicollet process. That includes assisting with preparing personalized roadmaps and implementing customized financial solutions. Prior to joining Nicollet, Nate spent six-plus years as a Wealth Manager at Morgan Stanley in Minneapolis where he developed an extensive background as a comprehensive fee-only financial advisor, total balance sheet & income planner, and bespoke portfolio manager for a diverse array of clients. Nate is excited to bring that skill-set and perspective to Nicollet Investment Management clients and team members.

Nate earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in Applied Economics & Finance and Sociology from the University of Minnesota – and has obtained the FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 licenses.

Susan Jalics Becker, CFA, Senior Managing Director

Sue joined Nicollet in 2021, drawn to the firm’s client-focused, customized approach to planning and investing. Her prior experience as an investment banker, working at Bank of America and RBS in Chicago, gives her a depth of knowledge in financial analysis and addressing the unique needs of complex situations. Upon moving to Minneapolis, Sue has worked with several nonprofits and community organizations, helping to allocate funds in line with their mission statements. After her experiences teaching a basic finance and budgeting class to incarcerated women, wealth management became her career focus as a pathway to help people achieve their financial goals and maximize potential.

A Cleveland native, Sue, along with her husband and two sons, has called Minneapolis home for over a decade. When not attending varied youth sports and activities, Sue enjoys volunteering in her sons’ school community, working on her golf game, and traveling to visit friends and family.

Sue holds a BS in Finance from Miami University and is a CFA® charter holder.

Jamie Raatz, Director of Client Services

Joining the Nicollet team in 2016, Jamie’s voice is the first one clients hear when they call. She handles all of the paperwork, forms, money-movement requests, and cares for our clients’ day-to-day administrative needs. Jamie started her career in the finance industry in 2014, with her work in the mortgage and life insurance industries giving her a broad base for understanding the big picture of financial planning for our clients.

Originally a native of Iowa, Jamie found a new home in Minnesota in 1997. The lights of her life are her faith, family, travel, and immersing herself in music.

Jamie earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.

Tim Fahey, Senior Managing Director

Tim joined Nicollet Investment Management in November of 2016 to take over management of the company’s fixed income, as our previous manager prepared for his retirement.

Tim comments that it was a revelation to work for a company that truly puts its clients first. At Nicollet, Tim builds fixed income portfolios based on information very specific to each client. He can do this because of the specialized tools developed by Nicollet specific to building individualized portfolios of bonds.

Prior to joining Nicollet, he had a well-rounded start in the investment industry working on municipal bond origination, bond delivery, and as a trading assistant. Later, he specialized in selling fixed income securities to cities, counties, school districts, banks, and mutual funds.

Working with local governments spurred his passion for all aspects of fixed income investing. He has twice been appointed to serve on the Executive Committee of MNGFOA, a non-profit that educates local government employees on all facets of government finance issues.

Tim is married to Sarah, and their family includes a Shar-Pei, Chuck. His outside interests include growing roses, family hunting trips, reading, martial arts, and traveling. Sarah and Tim are active supporters of Home for Life, an animal sanctuary, NAMI, and spinal cord injury research.

He attended the College of St. Thomas and majored in Ancient History and Finance, and has earned the FINRA licenses 7, 63, and 65.

Nicholas Heyer, senior Managing Director

Nick manages Nicollet’s mid/small-cap stock strategy.

After more than two decades as a portfolio manager/equity analyst, Nick has seen trends come and go, bear markets, bull markets, and everything in between. All of this experience helped deepen his perspective on investing.

Before joining Nicollet in 2002, he was a founding member of and portfolio manager at Zak Capital, Inc., a Minneapolis-based institutional investment management firm. There Nick learned the importance of a focused, detailed investment process, before bringing his passion for investing to Nicollet where he now loves helping our clients meet their goals.

Away from the office, Nick enjoys spending time with his wife, Amy, and college-age kids, and they enjoy traveling and spending quality time on the lake together. He maintains a diligent yoga practice to keep his mind and body sharp, enjoys early morning golf with friends, and agonizes over perpetually under-performing local professional sports teams.

As an active member of the Minneapolis Rotary, Nick helps the club with their primary service commitment to The Family Partnership, enriching the lives of Minneapolis youth.

Nick graduated from Drake University with a B.A. in Finance.

Kathy Carlson, Director of Operations

Kathy is the secret sauce of Nicollet Investment Management. She handles a multitude of behind-the-scenes services that keep our firm moving forward. While most of our clients don’t have much contact with her, she has more contact with their accounts than most of the firm, watching over performance reporting, trade execution, compliance, and office operations to name a few. Kathy has worked in the financial services industry since the early 1980s, joining Nicollet in 2002.

A good Finn from Northern Minnesota, Kathy took the road less traveled and moved to Hawaii after college. Two years of sunny weather (and one hurricane) later, she returned to Minnesota. She still travels the world but, luckily for us, returns to the roost every time!

Kathy earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Marketing from Bemidji State University.
